The Primedy Healthspan Challenge

Don't just measure how long you'll live. Measure how well.

Lifespan is how many years you get. Healthspan is how many of them you spend strong, mobile, and independent. The Primedy Healthspan Challenge is a 10-station assessment of the physical capacities that science links most directly to a long, capable life — so you know exactly where you stand, and exactly what to build next.

OCT 17

First In-Person Challenge · Saturday, October 17, 2026

One day. Ten stations. ~2.5 hours. Coach-led at Primedy in Mount Airy, MD. Limited waves of 4–8 athletes.

The Big Idea

Meet your Functional Age — and learn how to move it.

Your birthday says one number. Your body performs at another. The Healthspan Challenge measures your Functional Age — how old your strength, power, fitness, and balance actually perform compared to the population. Plenty of people walk out performing 5, 10, even 15 years younger than the date on their license.

And here's the part that makes it stick: it's a number you get to change. Train with intent and it drops. It turns "getting in shape" into something you can see move — proof that the work is making you more capable, more energetic, and more resilient, both now and decades from now. This isn't about avoiding decline. It's about expanding what your body can do and how good it feels doing it.

Something to strive for

A clear target and a scoreboard that rewards consistency. Watch your Functional Age trend younger as you build real strength, power, and endurance.

A map to thrive

The Challenge pinpoints your biggest opportunities — the one or two areas where focused work pays off most — so your training has direction, not just effort.

The Science

Every station earns its place in the data.

We didn't invent these tests — we assembled them from large, long-running studies in which each measure independently predicted how long and how well people lived. A few of the findings behind the battery:

39%

Lower all-cause mortality in adults with top-third maximal strength vs. the bottom third — independent of cardio fitness.

Ruiz et al., BMJ 2008 · 8,762 adults

13–15%

Lower mortality for every one-MET gain in cardiorespiratory fitness — the single strongest predictor in the battery, with no observed ceiling of benefit.

Mandsager, JAMA 2018 · Kokkinos, JACC 2022

5.0×

Higher cardiovascular mortality for adults scoring poorly on the sitting-rising test — a single move capturing strength, balance, flexibility & composition.

Araujo et al., Eur J Prev Cardiol 2025

Grip strength outpredicts blood pressure for mortality risk. The inability to balance on one leg for ten seconds is tied to markedly higher mortality. Lower-body power outperforms raw strength as a predictor in middle and older age. The Challenge brings these signals together into one picture of how your body is aging — biologically, not just by the calendar.

The Event

Ten stations. One complete picture of physical capacity.

Each station is a quick, coachable test you'll move through with guidance. Together they cover strength, power, endurance, mobility, balance, and body composition — the full span of what keeps a body capable.

1

Body Composition

Skeletal muscle mass and body fat — the structural baseline for everything else.

Muscle protects · fat predicts risk

2

Sitting-Rising Test

Getting to the floor and back up with minimal support — four fitness qualities in one move.

Whole-body longevity marker

3

Single-Leg Stance

How long you hold balance on one leg. Simple, revealing, and trainable.

Control that keeps you moving freely

4

Grip Strength

Maximal handgrip force — a proxy for total-body strength and nervous-system health.

Stronger predictor than blood pressure

5

Deadlift Strength

Posterior-chain force production — the engine behind lifting, carrying, and independence.

Lower-body & back strength

6

Overhead Press Strength

Standing upper-body pushing power with no leg drive — real, honest pressing strength.

Upper-body force

7

Max Push-Ups

Upper-body muscular endurance — how long your pushing strength lasts.

Staying power for your heart & arms

8

Pull-Ups or Dead Hang

Pulling strength, endurance, and grip integrity — relative to your own bodyweight.

Upper-body pulling capacity

9

VO₂ Max · Run or Row

A maximal-effort mile run or 2K row to estimate cardiorespiratory fitness.

Your daily energy & endurance engine

10

Vertical or Broad Jump

Explosive lower-body power — the speed side of strength, and a key marker as we age.

Power outpredicts strength later in life

You'll walk away with your Functional Age, a clear read on where you're already strong, and the top one or two areas where focused training will move that number the most. We re-test on a schedule, so you get to watch it drop — progress you can actually see.

Two Ways To Take It

Come in for the full experience — or start at home.

The Challenge was built so it can travel. The in-person event is the complete, coach-validated version. The at-home version lets you measure most of the same capacities on your own, with everyday equipment, before you ever set foot in the gym.

In-Person · Aug 22

The In-Gym Challenge

A single, ~2.5-hour coached event at Primedy. You move through all ten stations in waves of 4–8, with a coach validating every rep, timing every effort, and walking you through your results at the end.

  • Precision body-composition scan on our equipment
  • Barbell stations (deadlift, press) run safely with coaching
  • Coach-validated form, timing, and rep counts
  • Same-day debrief with your top priority areas
At-Home · Self-Paced

The At-Home Version

A four-day testing week you run on your own schedule with simple substitutes — a tape measure, a timer, a scale, a doorway bar. It covers nearly every station, with the same standards, so your scores stay comparable to the in-gym event.

  • Spread across four days so each test is performed fresh
  • Validated at-home substitutes for most stations
  • Minimal equipment — most of it you already own
  • Come in for the barbell strength station when you're ready
